Local man receives model ship awards
The 1/8 scale model of the USS Pennsylvania constructed by Daniel Deatrich of Waynesboro recently received two awards at the “Task Force 50” R/C scale ship model regatta held at Lake Redman in York County. The “Pennsy” was awarded first place in the Static-Military division and the Modeler’s Choice Award, which is voted on by the participants in the regatta.
Construction of the USS Pennsylvania has taken many years and is still a work in progress, according to Deatrich, who also is director of the Wayne Band.
The “Pennsy” is 90 percent scratch built from various plans including those from the National Archives and was constructed using a wide range of materials. It features revolving turrets, 16-inch gunfire sounds and a 21-piece Navy band with music from an old cassette recorder inside the ship. The “Pennsy” is powered by two 12-volt motors and all features are controlled by an eight-channel R/C unit.

n More than 200 students at Waynesboro Area Senior High School gathered around the flagpole on the anniversary of 9/11 to honor our nation with a moment of silence. Senior Nate Roefaro helped organize the event, which included a brief statement from Principal Pappas as well as the playing of the song “God Bless the USA” by Lee Greenwood.
n More than 270 grandparents attended Grandparents Day at Hooverville Elementary School Sept. 12.
n WASHS teachers Erin Stoops, Sherry Kelley, Emily Nystrom, Catherine Hade and Melanie Bitner participated in the Muddy Mamas mud run Sept. 6 to benefit Girls Inc. of Washington County, Maryland, a non-profit program that teaches girls how to be self-sufficient, confident and responsible young women.
Greencastle TOPS
The best “loser” for August of Greencastle TOPS (Take Off Pounds Sensibly) 1003 was Tonya Payne. Judy Piper reached her goal and became a KOPS (Keep Off Pounds Sensibly). She was presented yellow roses and a charm by leader Brenda Harp. Walter Burkett was recognized for being a KOPS for one year, Kitty Dice for eight years and Pat Fridgen for 10 years.
Bob Poole, as chairman of the annual Heart Walk for the American Heart Association, has tickets for subs at Kline’s Grocery Store, Shady Grove, for the club to sell as a fundraiser for the project. The club will participate in the Heart Walk Sunday, Sept. 21.
A contest for September, the “27 Day Challenge,” began. Each member decided on four areas they need to work on and wrote them down for tracking. A member can put their name in a container for a drawing each time they complete the weekly challenge. The winner will be announced from a drawing at the beginning of October.
Fall Rally, which involves all the area TOPS Clubs, will be held Saturday, Oct. 11, at the Newville Friendship Hose Co. Summer contest winners will be announced.
